Laguna Hills Transitional White L-Shaped Kitchen & Home Remodel

This lovely home in Laguna Hills got a much needed update when our team was called in. Read on to learn about the various stages of the complete remodeling done in the kitchen, dining room, entryway, laundry room, bathrooms, and other areas of the home.  

Before

Prior to our redesign, the home’s look was neat overall, yet too beige and blah. Because the color tones of the walls, floors, and finishes were all so monotonous, the house felt devoid of any character or uniqueness. The homeowner wanted to refresh the look with something more striking, so our team of interior designers and contractors worked with them to establish a whole new style that better reflected their refined taste.

Restructuring

One of the first things the homeowner wanted to do was add contrast to the palette used throughout the home. We helped them select dark, ½” thick hardwood floors from Johnson’s English Pub collection, in a Brandy Wine finish. This deep hued wood covers the floors of the downstairs hallway, entryway, dining room, and family room. Its coloring is mirrored in the freshly painted railings of the staircase and gallery, as well as the island in the kitchen and custom cabinetry found in the family room and upstairs hallway. These cabinets are made of a rich brown African Mahogany, with a Euro face frame door style. The outer wall of the family room originally had a cut out section, but we filled it in to give the room a cozier feel. On the face of the fireplace, new Sparkstone Harbor Mist tiles were added for a warm, earthy look.   In the new transitional style kitchen, paint grade maple cabinets were finished with a creamy marshmallow white, which added light to the space and kept things looking pristine. They run in an L-shape along the outer walls of the kitchen. The dark wood hue of the island cabinets is echoed by the dark handles found on each one of the drawers and doors. We worked with the homeowner to design completely customized cabinets that meet their unique needs and make the most of tricky areas like corners and narrow openings. New Quay Cambria Quartz countertops add subtle shine to the kitchen’s surfaces, and are softened by a fine Navid edge. A Dal-Tile backsplash runs along the entire space beneath the cabinets, featuring a herringbone pattern focal point above the stove top. Eleganza Metropolis tiles in a Blanc finish were installed on the floors of the kitchen, as well as the laundry room, which was also updated with the same cabinetry and countertops of the kitchen.  

Appliances

The client chose a number of new appliances by KitchenAid, including a 23 ¼” dishwasher installed in the new island, a 30” 5 burner gas cooktop from the Architect Series II, and a 27” double convection oven, also from the same series. Next to the oven was placed a new 24.6 cu. ft. refrigerator by LG. A Sharp 1.2 cu. ft. microwave rests beneath the countertop, and Blanco Silgranit Platinum Series undermount sink was embedded in the island to the right of the dishwasher. An Elegant Design Build Kitchen and Bath Redesign in West Covina

When you first walked into the kitchen and bathroom of this West Covina home, you would immediately notice they were dark, outdated and fundamentally very uninspired. The kitchen had builder-grade, generic cabinets, and black appliances, as well as a wide extension over the bar area that closed it off to the living space. The bathroom didn’t feel even remotely modern.

The APlus team partnered with the homeowners to redesign these spaces and breathe new life into them.

The Kitchen

The design concept of the kitchen after the APlus remodel is elegant, traditional-yet-modern and regal in its presentation. The homeowners wanted something that felt classic and timeless, yet updated.

The dark wood cabinets feature a Victorian door frame with Nadia molding extending to the ceiling.

Central in the kitchen is an expansive island topped by the same creamy stone used on the countertops, which is Sage Brush granite. There is seating, storage, and cooking space all contained within this convenient, eye-catching island.

The luxury appliance packages includes a KitchenAid side-by-side stainless steel refrigerator surrounded by a built-in pantry and additional custom cabinetry and pull-out drawers, providing an abundance of storage space.

There is a commercial-grade gas cooktop, as well as double convection ovens and a sleek mounted range hood with state-of-the-art capabilities.

The cabinetry and countertops are accentuated with the cream-colored backsplash, which features a stacked stone effect with vertical tiles in varying shades. To add distinction to the range, the backsplash tile continues here but is applied in a contrasting herringbone pattern.

Below the kitchen window sits a beautiful and carefully selected 36-inch Risinger Fireclay Farmhouse sink with a smooth front and an off-set double-basin design.

Completing this sumptuous, vibrant design, is the hardwood flooring, which is from the English Pub Series, and is maple hand-scraped. The color of the flooring in the kitchen is “Stout.”

Family Room

The hardwoods flow seamlessly to the family room, where there’s a custom-crafted entertainment center that becomes the focal point. APlus worked with the homeowners to create a center that would have the perfect combination of hidden storage with display shelving, as well as space for their flat-screen TV.

The color and design of the entertainment center replicate the kitchen cabinetry, creating cohesiveness, and additional design details and customizations include shelf lighting. The entertainment center extends to the ceiling of the family room.

The Bathroom

Again, to maintain a good sense of flow throughout the house, the design of the bathroom is influenced by the kitchen. There continues to be a sense of grandeur and decadence in this space, much like what you find in the kitchen.

Here the bathtub is undoubtedly the focal point, as it’s expansive, spanning about five feet. This freestanding tub features a gentle curving design, and the oil rubbed bronze faucet is wall-mounted against a backdrop of horizontal tiling, similar to the kitchen backsplash.

A custom vanity is home to two undermount basin sinks, again with plumbing hardware mounted on the wall for a modern touch. The cabinets are similar to those found in the kitchen and were designed and constructed by APlus with a Victorian door frame and Nadia molding.

The stone and flooring in the bathroom is a combination of Italian porcelain clay in the color Rassoul, along with Siberian White Limestone.

In addition to the luxurious soaking tub, the bathroom includes a frameless glass enclosed walk-in shower, with horizontal tiling to the ceiling, and a contrasting tiled shower floor.

As well as the vanity, there is additional built-in custom storage, including a floating cabinet across from the vanity, and a shelving unit above the tub.

The bathroom is separate in its own nook, for added privacy.

A Transitional Kitchen and Family Room Remodel in Lake Forest, Orange County

When you initially walked into the kitchen and living area of this Lake Forest home, you found a color palette of outdated earth tones that felt heavy and not in-line with the beautiful backyard and pool area these spaces open to. The medium tone oak cabinetry was placed alongside muted granite countertops, and the dining area felt cramped and oddly separated from the kitchen.

A big part of this design and remodel project centered around finding a way to improve the flow of the space and also to create a sense of cohesiveness and an updated design as you moved from the kitchen to the family room.

The Kitchen Cabinets

Pivotal to the transitional remodel in this Lake Forest home was the selection of cabinetry. To brighten and modernize the kitchen, where the footprint went largely unchanged, we chose 3-inch Shaker cabinets in straight white. They feature solid maple doors, and unique customizations including a valance set over the sink, as well as hidden storage underneath the peninsula. Wainscotting detailing cleverly conceals these storage additions.

We created a custom refrigerator door for a seamless design. There is also a custom microwave cabinet, so this small appliance is covertly out of view.

Tile and Countertops

The overall color palette in this kitchen remodel is gray and white. The stone kitchen countertops are polished Gray Savoie granite, and the profile is a 1 ½-inch square mitered profile.

Paired with the gray square-edged countertops is a sleek, modern tile backsplash consisting of Eleganza Vetro tile in Snow White with gray grout. This glass tile is a premium selection, evoking stylishness, with a clean edge, subtle texturing and a very glossy finish.

This tile is carried up to the ceiling behind the wall-mounted range hood.

Appliances and Sink

The appliances in the Lake Forest represent some of the finest available. The appliance package includes the eye-catching Zephyr wall-mounted stainless range hood, as well as a Wolf professional-quality convection steam oven.

There’s a compact yet functional bar area between the refrigerator and the ovens, and this is where you’ll find not only additional countertop space and cabinet storage overhead but also the inclusion of a sleek 24-inch stainless steel wine cooler.

The sink serves as not just a functional addition, but also a beautiful feature piece. The farmhouse sink is a Blanco Cerana 33-inch Fireclay Front Apron single design, and it’s set against a large window providing views of the backyard and pool.

Dining Space

Directly adjacent to the kitchen is a stunning, custom dining space, where there was once a cramped and somewhat awkward area with minimal space to eat.

What replaces that is a custom-designed and built banquette-style bench with a high back, paired with a butcher block dining table.

The butcher block table was the creation of the homeowners and the designer, and the table top is solid, natural walnut with an oil-rubbed finish. The richness of the wood is an ideal pairing with the airiness of the rest of the kitchen design.

The Family Room

To keep the design cohesive and flowing naturally, APlus Kitchen also revamped the homeowners’ family room. The walls were painted a modern shade of icy blue-grey, and custom cabinetry was installed to the right of the fireplace, which was also redesigned by the APlus team.

The fireplace features a natural stacked stone façade and a floating mantel that matches the butcher block dining table. To the right of the fireplace are a combination of custom floating shelves and a built-in cabinet with spacious drawers for storage.

Under the corner windows in the family room is a built-in seating area, again with a butcher block-inspired top, and additional drawer storage underneath.

The ceiling feels high and open thanks to the recessed lighting, and large windows ensure plenty of natural light comes into the family room.

A Luxurious Traditional Design and Remodel in Laguna Hills Orange County

Comparing the before to the after of this Orange County home would make it difficult to see that it was even the same home.

Before the APlus team started work, this Laguna Hills home featured a narrow, dark, closed in and incredibly small kitchen. The overall layout of the kitchen and living area was not just cramped, but was choppy and felt illogical. The kitchen was separated from the dining room by a complete wall, with only a narrow doorway leading from one space to the next. The kitchen was not only small but also lacking in functionality, with incredibly limited countertop space.

Decadent Custom Cabinets

The remodel allowed this Laguna Hills home to be completed transformed into a space that’s large, bright and high-end. This started with the custom cabinetry, designed by the APlus team and built in the onsite shop.

The cabinets are traditional in their style and color. The homeowners selected maple cabinets in the signature Victorian Ryan door style, and they’re paired with a matching edge band.

The color, which is so striking in this kitchen, is Manganese, a dark, chocolatey shade of brown that adds depth, richness and a feeling of sumptuousness throughout the kitchen.

Over the range is a custom hood, and there’s also a valance over the sink.

Built into the island cabinets is ample storage including a combination of shelving and drawers.

To the left of the double ovens is a custom, built-in banquette-style seating area, with storage underneath.

A standalone pantry was designed by the homeowners and APlus to serve as a creative, beautiful place to store food and additional dishes and kitchen supplies. The pantry features a combination of shelves and pull-out drawers and extends to the now-high ceilings.

The Island

The island is in and of itself a masterpiece in this kitchen. What was once a small space with only a few feet of countertop space has become an oasis.

The island features an expansive granite countertop that’s thick, solid and eye-catching. The granite features a cream backdrop with varying shades of brown, black and gray running throughout the slab. The island countertop is thicker than the granite perimeter countertops, which feature a 1 1/2 -inch waterfall edge. There is not only storage and prep space as part of the island, but also, bar seating on either side.

The island also features columned supports on the far end, with more seating and detailed trim additions.

A small basin sink adds additional preparation space, and over the island hangs ornate pendant lights adding Old World charm.

The Appliances

This is truly a chef’s kitchen, and the appliances reflect that. Along with the double-door massive stainless steel refrigerator, the kitchen also includes a Thermador double oven with soft-close doors and a large commercial style rotisserie, as well as two telescopic racks.

The Thermador 36-inch gas Pro Harmony Range features professional grates and a custom hood insert with blower.

Flooring and Tile

This kitchen features a backsplash with a horizontal pattern, and glass tiles in varying shades of gray and brown, reflecting the colors of the granite countertops. This backsplash adds depth and dimension to the space.

From the kitchen to the family room the choppy design has been reconfigured and smartly opened up, and very light, washed pine-style hardwood flooring with hints of gray undertones runs from in the kitchen through to the family room, tying the design together and uniting what was once a broken and ill-configured design.

A Fresh, Transitional Kitchen Remodel in Tustin with Custom-Colored Cabinetry

In the previous design, when you walked into this Tustin kitchen you were greeted with a space that felt very traditional and somewhat dark, with cabinetry that almost entirely matched the flooring, leaving very little visual contrast or distinctive design. Essentially, there wasn’t anything that was really customized or that stood out about the original design.

We did keep much of the original layout since it worked well for the homeowners, but we created a transitional design where the focus was on the beautiful, custom-colored cabinetry. The cabinetry, which we brought to the ceiling and framed with a wide customized molding, features soft close details, and Craftsman 2 ½-inch door frames. The cabinets remain along the perimeter of the kitchen and are maple construction.

The truly unique feature of these stunning cabinets, however, is the color, which is completely unique to the homeowners’ design and is two shades later than classic Sage Green. The island is a darker contrasting color—true Sage Green.

The island features a Craftsman design with flat molding and hand-crafted posts located as supports for the seating area.

The herringbone tile backsplash is in varying tones of gray and white, and extends to the ceiling above the range and beneath the GE Monogram 36-inch wall-mount vent hood. This backsplash adds a touch of modernism to the design and feels chic and clean yet visually exciting.

The white countertops feature subtle marbling patterns, and the island is where the Kraus double-basin 16-gauge exclusive undermount sink is located.

This Tustin kitchen remodel also features a GE Monogram 36-inch cooktop, and a KitchenAid 30-inch electric built-in microwave and oven combination.

The cabinet and island designs were carefully planned to maximize storage, and a built-in pantry closet located along the side wall of the kitchen was revamped to match the color and style of rest of the kitchen cabinets.

The pendant lights above the large island are another added bit of modern design that reflects the overall transitional concept of this kitchen overhaul.
